Honoring National Bike Month & Everyday Mobility Justice

Happy National Bike Month, PMJ Family, Friends, and Allies!

While May marks the official celebration of bikes, at PMJ, we honor biking and mobility every day. Whether riding to school, commuting to work, or cruising in a community ride, cycling represents more than movement, it is s a tool for resilience, community building, and social change, especially in BIPOC communities.

๐ŸŒฑ Clean Mobility in South Central

This April, the South Central Power Up (SCPU) Lending Library pilot program hosted more bike trainings and clean mobility assessments alongside community partners. On May 17, we continued the momentum with a National Bike Month community ride, featuring a visit to Biddy Mason Memorial Park, a powerful tribute to LA history and Black resilience.

๐Ÿšธ Safety Education in Florence-Firestone & Willowbrook & West Rancho-Dominguez

During the 30th Annual National Public Health Week, PMJ partnered with the Department of Public Health to present on pedestrian and bicycle safety at Franklin D. Roosevelt Park and lead multiple community walks. We also engaged residents at a Rising Communities delegates meeting in Watts/Willowbrook to discuss everyday safety, shared street responsibilities, and โ€œKnow Your Rightsโ€ training.

๐Ÿš Transit Justice Advocacy

In April, PMJ joined our ACT-LA Coalition partners at the Metro Board Meeting to advocate for an expansion of the Metro Ambassador Program and increased homeless/mental health outreach. We uplifted community visions of care, not policing, as key to real safety for transit riders.

โš ๏ธ Protesting for Safer Streets

On April 30, PMJ stood with Families for SAFE Streets, LA Walks, Streets for All, and other allies for a die-in protest at City Hall. The action was in response to proposed cuts to LADOT, which could drastically reduce road safety staffing and increase traffic violence. Our collective message: Mobility justice and public safety are not negotiable. Media coverage included LAist, NBCLA, and Torched.
